Map including Brasília and Campinas

Since arriving in Brazil, we have been able to step right into ministry roles alongside my parents in their church, but have hit a series of frustrating road blocks when trying to find housing in the Brasília area. My recent visits to São Paulo state, to the south, have yielded not only some preaching engagements, but have now opened a possible six-month solution to our housing situation. We have been offered the use of the mission house used by Steve and Marilyn Trask while they return to the States for six months. This arrangement would include opportunity for work among the Brazilian pastors in the area, as well as access to a well-known language school for Ann Janel to continue her Portuguese training. Based on how contacts have worked in just two visits to the state, this stay might also be a springboard for long-term ministry opportunities, if not in Campinas, in neighboring cities or states.

Pray with us, that God will give us wisdom in evaluating this opportunity. Pray also for Brasília and the surrounding area. Even if we accept this offer, it does not mean we will abandon any plans for churches in this area. My heart has a special spot for this city, and I still hope to see several churches started in the Federal District.

Update: November 19, 2007

We are still researching the possibilities I mentioned above, but I thought I would add this: We checked into the language school, and discovered that it has some very promising aspects. Interclass has been around since 1973, and, because of a long history with mission boards, it has classes specifically tailored for missionaries. Class size, schedules, and programs are all individually tailored to the student's needs. Ann Janel is excited about this opportunity. Please continue praying that we will have the wisdom to make the correct decision regarding this possible move.

Update: December 16, 2007

During our recent trip to southern Brazil we were able to stop by Campinas and visit with the Trasks. They were gracious enough to host us for a night, then take us out to Interclass to get to know the school. This visit was all we needed to confirm our decision to go. Now the interesting part: we have about a month to discover the best way to move our family to southern Brazil. As far as I know, U-Haul isn't an option here, so we are in for yet another learning experience. Please pray that we can find the right means to get our things moved to Campinas.

Update: January 10, 2008

The date is set: on January 18 the movers will be coming to pick up our stuff. We will have one more Sunday with the church in Brasilinha, then leave January 21 to Campinas.

Here are a few things you can pray for:

  • Pray that everything goes smoothly with the moving company. It is our first move in country, so we will see how well it goes.
  • Pray for safety for our family as we drive the 600 or so miles to our new city.
  • Pray for a smooth transition for the kids and family.
  • Pray for Ann Janel and the kids and their language acquisition.

Update: February 13, 2008

We arrived safely in Campinas on January 21. We quickly fell into the swing of things with youth camp the following week, and Ann Janel's language classes beginning this week. Thanks for your prayers! See also: Settling In
